If you build it, they won’t necessarily come. Not unless you have something worthwhile to say, buy or do on your website. It’s also a good idea to give something away for free. Something memorable. Something that will advertise your presence long after the 30 second (average site visit) experience you give them.
If you want more traffic, consider these following methods:
- write a regular newsletter and let new people subscribe
- create a formal online store / shopping area with Paypal
- get involved with an online ad campaign such as google adwords
- optimise your site for Search Engine friendliness
- start an affiliate program so others can sell your wares for a percentage
- share links with complimentary websites
- write a white paper on the benefits of your good / service
- write a press release for complimentary sites / traditional media
- create a profile for a social networking site such as Facebook, Twitter or MySpace
- competitions, podcasts, write on forums, blogs, attend online tradeshows
Perhaps the most important thing to do is update your site as regularly as you can. Daily if possible – but failing that – weekly. With 200 million plus websites out there – it’s a battle to get noticed. Constant updating should see you rise in the search engine ranks and if you are saying something worthwhile, people will link to you – further pushing you up the ladder. Nobody can promise a page one ranking because tehre are just too many web marketers out there. But if you do the things listed above – you are giving yourself the best chance.
Think about your site as just the tip of an iceberg. 90% of the work you need to do on your site is what lies beneath.
